ɔkantɔ (work in progress)

ɔkantɔ focuses on analyzing a “matriarchal society” of the Bijagós archipelago in Guinea Bissau which confronts the values of the Western patriarchal and capitalist societies. An intimate approach to the lives of three different generation of women from Orango Island. We will follow Moskuta, the village priestess, Joaquina, a fisherwoman, and Eva with her three children.

The ceremonies and rituals are loaded with symbolism where women’s spirituality takes center stage. The ritual is an ancestral and central element in their lives that allows them to create links and networks between women and the rest of the community in addition to granting them traits of power and identity.
